Manhattan Solid Waste Advisory Board (MSWAB)

As a member of the MSWAB since 2023, I work closely with committee chairs to disseminate educational content and news updates on all things solid waste. Our mission is to help New York City become a leader in zero waste policies and programs by emphasizing the importance of reduction and reuse strategies.

As chair of the web and communications committee, I designed and manage the website, educational content for social media, develop public service announcement signs for outdoor advertising, develop the monthly newsletters, and engage with local organizations, zero waste leaders and elected officials.

Using data from NYC’s Open Data dashboard, I partnered with other MSWAB members to analyze where NYC’s refuse is sent and quantify the yearly tonnage. I then researched the end destinations based on the NYC Department of Sanitation’s Solid Waste Management Report. Most recipient’s of NYC’s refuse are overburdened environmental justice communities (low income and people of color). This campaign highlights New York City’s impact on areas outside of the city and New York State like in Chester, Pennsylvania.
